1994-1997 Tuning & Monitors

The 7.3 Powerstroke, the first electronically controlled diesel in the US market, allowed for the first time that a diesel could be tuned with a computer for higher performance and fuel efficiency. 

Being the 1990’s, these programmers and chips were basic in nature, some plugging directly into the onboard computer (PCM) with no adjustability, some having a dial for several tunes, and hand-held programmers you plugged into the diagnostic port, loaded the tuning adjustment you wanted at that time and once it completed unplugging the programmer and storing it away until the next time you wanted to change the performance level.

Now, we have tuners that allow changing power levels while driving and the ability to upgrade tunes without sending in a chip for updates. Quality tuning can benefit all 7.3s, from stock to full-blown race trucks. Tuning helps with added power and efficiency. 

Some monitors can also control tuning, but the biggest benefit of a monitor is its ability to display important data that would otherwise require a large number of traditional gauges to accomplish.
