The Danger of Valve Float

In a high performance 7.3L build, increased boost pressure actually works against your valves. High exhaust backpressure and extreme intake boost can literally blow the valves wide open when they should be closed, or cause the valves to bounce off the seat at high RPMs. This is known as the dreaded… valve float.

Valve float leads to:

  • A sudden drop in power and efficiency.

  • Piston to valve contact (which means a catastrophic, expensive engine tear down).

  • Poor performance and a smoky exhaust.

Your factory springs were designed in the 1990s for a stock truck making 215–275 horsepower. If you are aiming for over 500 horsepower, those old springs just won’t cut it anymore.

Why the Beehive Design?

The CNC Fab Stage 2 kit utilizes an advanced Beehive design. Unlike traditional straight cylindrical springs, beehive springs taper at the top.

This unique shape offers massive advantages:

  1. Reduced Valve Train Mass: The smaller top means a smaller, lighter retainer can be used. Less weight in the valvetrain means the valve can open and close faster and more precisely.

  2. Better Stress Distribution: The progressive diameter naturally dampens harmonics and valvetrain vibrations, drastically extending the life of the spring and preventing fatigue failure under high loads.

The Specs

We engineered this kit specifically for demanding, high horsepower applications. Here is a look at what you’re putting under your valve covers:

  • Seat Load: 155 lbs @ 1.880"

  • Spring Open Load: 377 lbs

  • Spring Rate: 370 lbs

  • Recommended Valve Lift: Up to 0.600”

  • Coil Bind: 1.210"

With a seat load of 155 lbs, these springs provide the brute force necessary to snap the valves shut and hold them sealed against extreme boost pressures, ensuring your cylinders maintain maximum compression.
