Stop Valve Float Before It Kills Your Powerstroke: Upgrade to Ovate Valve Springs
When pushing extra horsepower out of your 6.0L or 6.4L Powerstroke, most people start with aggressive tuning, larger injectors, and bigger turbo setups.
While air and fuel get all the attention, the valvetrain quietly absorbs the abuse. Factory valve springs on these Powerstroke engines were engineered strictly for stock boost levels, factory RPM ceilings, and daily commuting. Once you introduce higher boost pressures, aftermarket tuning, or extended towing loads, stock springs become a major failure point.
Here is why your factory valvetrain struggles under boost, what ovate spring technology actually does, and why our CNC Fabrication Stage 1 Ovate Valve Spring Kit (SKU: 421077) is built to protect your build.

Valve Float & Boost Pressure
Valve float happens when a valve spring lacks sufficient seat pressure or open force to keep the valve follower riding smoothly against the camshaft lobe.
On a turbocharged diesel running higher boost, intake and exhaust pressure push directly against the back of the valves. When combined with higher RPMs:
-
The valve fails to seat cleanly, bouncing off the valve seat.
-
Cylinder compression bleeds off, resulting in mysterious top-end power drops and misfires.
-
In worst-case scenarios, the valve stays open too long and contacts the rising piston, destroying your engine in seconds.
If you have upgraded turbochargers, aggressive fueling, or exhaust brakes, relying on old factory springs is a roll of the dice.
Why Ovate Wire Springs Outperform Standard Round Wire
Not all performance springs are created equal. Traditional aftermarket springs often use conventional round wire. While they can increase pressure, round wire concentrates physical stress into specific high-friction points, generating excess heat and limiting usable valve lift before coil bind.
Our Stage 1 kit utilizes an ovate (oval) wire profile.
-
Uniform Stress Distribution: The oval cross-section spreads torsional and mechanical stress evenly across the wire body rather than concentrating it on the inner diameter.
-
Higher Lift, Less Bind: Ovate wire packages more mechanical control into a compact height, allowing for increased valve lift without binding issues.
-
Superior Harmonic Control: Oval springs inherently dampen high-RPM valvetrain harmonics and resonance, eliminating spring surge and extending spring longevity under sustained loads.
Each spring in our 32-piece set undergoes micro-polishing to remove surface imperfections, reducing friction and fatigue over millions of cycles.
Installation & Shimming
Whenever cylinder heads are off for head studs, gaskets, or a fresh build, installing valve springs is standard best practice. Keep these practical tips in mind during installation:
-
No Shimming Usually Required: On factory-spec 6.0L and 6.4L heads, our Stage 1 springs drop right into place without needing spring cup shims.
-
Watch the Installed Height: If you must shim due to valve jobs or tip dressing, never shim more than 0.015".If your installed height varies significantly from 1.830", your valve seat depth or installed height is out of factory specification and should be addressed at the machine shop level.
-
Keep It Matched: Always inspect your retainers and valve locks for wear while swapping out springs to ensure consistent seat pressure across all 32 valves.
Built by Diesel Enthusiasts, for Diesel Enthusiasts
Whether daily driving a tow rig, building a reliable 6.0L street truck, or pushing high-boost dyno numbers on a 6.4L,valvetrain control is cheap insurance.
