Choosing the Right HPOP: Stage 1 vs. Stage 2?

by Cecilia Herrell 22 Apr 2026

If you own a 7.3L Powerstroke, you know that the High-Pressure Oil Pump (HPOP) is the heartbeat of your engine. Because the 7.3L uses a HEUI (Hydraulic Electronic Unit Injection) system, your oil pressure literally dictates your fuel delivery.

When it’s time to upgrade or replace a tired pump, the question isn’t just about bigger is better, it’s about matching. If your pump can’t maintain the ICP (Injection Control Pressure) your injectors are calling for, your performance will fall flat, and who wants that? Nobody.

The Main Difference: Volume vs. Pressure

Before picking a stage, understand this: Both our Stage 1 and Stage 2 pumps are designed to hold rock solid pressure. The difference lies in the volume of oil they can move to keep up with larger injector nozzles.

CNC Fab Stage 1 HPOP: The Reliability King

Our Stage 1 pump is the g -to for 90% of the trucks on the road. It is a heavy duty, designed pump that outperforms the stock Bosch units found in the 15° and 17° factory configurations.

  • Best For: Stock trucks, Daily Drivers, and Tow Rigs.

  • Injector Match: * Stock AA, AB, or AD injectors.

    • Stage 1 Single Shots (160cc/0% or 160cc/30%).

  • Why Choose It: If you aren't planning to go "wild" with your build, the Stage 1 provides the best value for the money. . It ensures that even under heavy towing, your ICP stays at the commanded level, preventing that logy feeling or smoke caused by dropping oil pressure.

CNC Fab Stage 2 HPOP: The Performance Powerhouse

The Stage 2 pump is a high displacement unit designed for those who have moved beyond the limits of "street-mild" fueling.

  • Best For: Hot street trucks, dedicated sled pullers, and high horsepower builds.

  • Injector Match:

    • 180cc/30% up to 250cc/100% Hybrids.

    • Any injector with a 100% (or larger) nozzle.

  • Why Choose It: Larger nozzles empty the injector intensifier internal cavity much faster. A standard pump often can't "refill" the oil demand quickly enough, causing the pressure to flatline at high RPMs. The Stage 2 provides the extra volume needed to keep those big injectors firing at peak efficiency throughout the entire power band.

The Hybrid Factor

If you are running Hybrid injectors (like 200cc/30%), you occupy a unique middle ground. Hybrid injectors are designed to use less oil to push the same amount of fuel.

  • The CNC Fab Recommendation: While a Stage 1 can run hybrids effectively, we usually recommend the Stage 2 for hybrids with 80% or 100% nozzles to ensure you have overhead. You never want your pump to be working at 100% duty cycle just to keep up.

The Bottom Line

Don't let your HPOP be the bottleneck of your build. If you're staying with mild injectors for better fuel economy and towing, the Stage 1 is your best friend. If you're chasing 450+ HP and have the injectors to match, the Stage 2 is a non-negotiable upgrade.
